How and When to Clean DE Filters
If you have a pool with a DE (diatomaceous earth) filter, you need to perform regular backwashing and cleaning to ensure that your pool is running efficiently and keeping your swimmers safe. You’ll want to backwash the filter anytime the filter pressure is 8-10 psi above the baseline, and you’ll want to fully clean the filter at least twice a year, per most manufacturer’s guidelines.
Backwashing is the process of reversing the flow of water through the filter to remove debris that has accumulated on the filter grid. To backwash your DE pool filter, start by turning off the pool pump and releasing the pressure from the system. Then, turn the multiport valve on the filter to the "backwash" position. Turn the pump back on and let it run for two to three minutes or until the water coming out of the waste line is clear.
After backwashing, you'll need to add new DE powder to the filter. To do this, turn off the pump and close the valves leading to the skimmer and main drain. Remove the filter cover and pour the required amount of DE powder into the skimmer. Then, turn the pump back on and allow it to run for a few minutes until the DE has been distributed throughout the filter grid.
In addition to backwashing, you'll need to perform a full cleaning of your DE pool filter periodically. This involves disassembling the filter and cleaning the grid with a hose and a filter cleaning solution. To clean your DE filter, start by turning off the pool pump and releasing the pressure from the system. Then, remove the filter cover and grid assembly from the filter housing.
Next, hose down the filter grid to remove any large debris. Then, soak the grid in a filter cleaning solution for several hours or overnight, depending on the manufacturer's instructions. After soaking, rinse the grid thoroughly with a hose to remove the cleaning solution and debris.
Finally, reassemble the filter, ensuring that all parts are properly secured and tightened. Turn the pump back on and check for any leaks or other issues.
Regular backwashing and cleaning of your DE pool filter is essential to ensure that your pool stays clean, clear, and healthy for swimming.
